Being under the influence of alcohol or drugs while driving is not only extremely dangerous, but also against the law. Those found drinking or taking drugs while driving face the possibility of a 12-month driving ban, paying a fine of up to £2,500 and even up to six months’ imprisonment. prison.
It is therefore both a concern but also a relief that police were able to apprehend and arrest more than 50 motorists over the Christmas and New Year period who were driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs .
As part of its campaign to tackle alcohol and drug-related driving accidents, roads policing forces in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire carried out regular checks throughout December and until the start of the new year.
The operation, which ran from December 18 to January 1, saw officers in England and Wales target motorists who were driving drunk, particularly around Christmas and New Year, when drug and alcohol use is particularly high as people celebrate the holidays and the new year. activities.
During the 15-day campaign, police stopped a total of 559 vehicles, and each of these motorists was asked to take a roadside breath test. Among the drivers arrested by the police, 43 drivers were arrested for drunk driving and nine for drunk driving.
PC Jon Morris, who took part in the December and New Year campaign, said: “It is pleasing to see the number of drivers arrested in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire as part of the campaign and I Hope our work has made drivers think twice before getting behind the wheel under the influence.
While it is encouraging to see police actively targeting motorists under the influence of alcohol and drugs, it is also alarming that a high number of drivers continue to drive while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. Motorists need to be more aware that their actions are not only illegal, but can also negatively impact other drivers and passengers around them. Be more responsible!
