Brendan Sorsby’s struggle to play this season has taken another turn. The Texas Tech quarterback is challenging the NCAA after being found ineligible for sports betting, asking a Texas court to step in and allow him to practice and play in what would be his final college season.
The case already has major stakes for Sorsby and the Red Raiders, but now there is another development, with Judge Phillip Hays recusing himself from the eligibility trial. That means the legal battle will continue under a different judge as Sorsby pushes for a ruling that could put him back on the field.
Judge Phillip Hays, who had been in charge of the Texas Tech quarterback’s case, withdrew. The move drew attention because Hays has ties to Texas Tech, having earned two degrees from the school, and is also a Lubbock native.
No specific reason was given for the recusal, but given the connection to the university, the decision will likely be seen as a way to avoid any potential conflicts of interest.
Breaking: The judge in Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby’s lawsuit against the NCAA has recused himself.
Judge Phillip Hays, a Lubbock native with two technology degrees, did not give a reason.
The replacement will be chosen by an administrative law judge with degrees from A&M and Baylor, but not Tech.

A Closer Look at the Case of Brendan Sorsby
Brendan Sorsby’s situation is now about more than just football eligibility. That has evolved into a larger fight over how the NCAA handles gambling cases involving athletes.
Sorsby is attempting to play his final college season at Texas Tech, but his status is uncertain due to past sports betting. His camp does not deny that bets were placed. Instead, the argument is that the NCAA is treating it too harshly while ignoring the broader reality of how close college sports is to the gaming industry.
His lawyers are also looking at the dependency angle. They argue that Sorsby recognized the problem, sought treatment and should not lose his senior year to a condition that they say should be treated with care rather than simply punishing.

The NCAA’s position will likely be much simpler. An athlete betting on games, especially involving his own team, is exactly the kind of thing the rules are supposed to prevent. From this perspective, the problem is not sympathy. This is competitive integrity.
This is what makes the case so interesting. Sorsby needs quick legal relief as the season and the NFL Supplemental Draft deadline both approach. If the court rules in his favor, he could join Texas Tech. Otherwise, his college career could be over before it actually begins in Lubbock.
PakarPBN
A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.
In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.
The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
